We're hiring a Product Engineer to build the features and interfaces that enterprise energy teams rely on every day.

TL;DR
We're hiring a Product Engineer in Ghent. The role is as much product and design as it is frontend engineering, and we're looking for someone who is very good at all three.
You talk to customers, work out what the real problem is, decide with the team what to build and how it should look, and then build it. There is no PM writing specs or designer making Figma files for you, so that work is part of the role.
Often, something a customer brings up on a call is live the next day. Then you check whether it solved their problem and keep improving it.
About Companion.energy
Companion.energy sits at the intersection of energy markets and industrial operations. We process real-time market signals and asset telemetry to make automated energy decisions every second: modelling complex contracts, forecasting demand and production, and translating predictions into actions that move megawatts and money.
The engineering problems are genuinely hard: time series at scale, real-time optimisation under uncertainty, and interfaces that make deep complexity manageable for the people who operate the grid's largest consumers.
Our software is used by large B2B enterprises and energy players to lower OPEX, maximize revenue, increase renewable usage, and manage risk.
Our data and ML team builds the forecasting and optimisation. Your job is to turn all of that into a product energy managers understand and like using: making sense of an energy contract, checking a supplier invoice against what it should have cost, or seeing what their flexibility earned them last month.
Why Companion.energy?
- Ship things that matter. The features you build are used by energy managers making million-euro decisions daily. You'll see impact fast.
- Full ownership. From the first customer conversation to the interface in production, you own what you build.
- Shape the product, not just the code. You'll talk to customers, propose features based on what you learn, and make product calls on the details that don't come with a spec.
- Join early, shape the future. You'll influence the architecture, tooling, and culture of a growing engineering team.
- A mission that matters. Good engineering in energy software accelerates the transition to a flexible, renewable grid.
What you'll do
- Talk to customers and join calls with our commercial team to discover the problems worth solving.
- Decide with the team what to build and how to build it.
- Work out the flows and screens yourself, from a rough sketch to a polished interface.
- Build it, mostly in React and TypeScript, with some Python when a feature needs it.
- Ship in small steps, see how customers use it and keep improving it.
- Own your features past the release: check in production whether they actually solve the customer's problem, and go back to them when they don't, together with the engineers and data scientists you build them with.
What we're looking for
Product
- You've shipped product that real users rely on, and you had a say in what got built.
- You turn a vague customer problem into a clear scope, and you know what to leave out.
- You can prioritise ideas and explain why.
Design
- You care about user experience and notice when a flow is confusing, before customers do.
- You get information hierarchy right, so dense energy data is easy to read at a glance.
- You have a good visual eye, and you can work within a design system and add to it.
- Working experience as a Product Designer is a big plus.
Frontend engineering
- You build polished, interactive interfaces in React and TypeScript, and you write code you're proud of.
- You care about the details: speed, responsiveness, and the empty, loading and error states.
- You move fast, and you know when something needs to be more robust.
Also
- You enjoy talking to customers and working closely with the commercial team.
- You use AI tools like Claude and Cursor every day to move faster, and you know where they fall short.
Nice to have
- Enough Python to make the backend change your feature needs, like writing an API or debugging across the stack.
- Founder or early-stage startup experience.
- Energy experience. We’ll teach you the domain, but an interest in this field is a requirement.
Location
Ghent, Belgium (hybrid: 3 days at the office)
How we hire
Intro call → product case → follow-up conversations with the team and founders.
The case takes about 4 hours. You explore a real part of our product, pick a problem worth solving, try a few directions and build a working prototype. We look at the problem you picked, the design choices you made and how well it's built, but it doesn't need to be pixel-perfect.
We keep it simple and move fast.
Ready to apply?
Share something you've built that you're proud of: a live link, screenshots or a short video of a feature you shipped, a side project or a GitHub repo. Tell us what you decided and why, and why this role excites you. Send it along with your CV to apply@companion.energy.
