Connecting network insights with energy intelligence

Published on
30 October 2026

Energy-efficient networks start with understanding what they consume. For Nokia’s telecom customers, that means looking beyond individual equipment. Beyond datasheets. Across the entire network. By connecting Nokia’s fiber network data with Companion.energy, operators gain a broader view of live energy consumption. The result: better insight into energy use today and a foundation for smarter cost and sustainability decisions tomorrow.

Context

Nokia develops fiber access technology built for energy-efficient connectivity. For its telecom and datacentre customers, energy performance matters. Both to manage operating costs and to support sustainability goals.

But fiber equipment is only one part of a network. Other systems consume energy too. Understanding how everything performs together requires a broader view.

Nokia’s Altiplano access controller provides insight into its fiber equipment. Connecting that data with Companion.energy creates an opportunity to bring network consumption into the operator’s wider energy, cost and sustainability picture.

Challenge

Telecom and data centre operators need to understand what their networks consume. And what that costs. Equipment datasheets provide reference figures. Live measurements show what happens in practice.

  • How much energy is equipment using right now?
  • How does that compare with its stated consumption?
  • How do different network elements contribute to total costs?
  • And where can operators improve cost effectiveness and sustainability?

Individual controllers provide part of the answer. But each covers a specific part of the network.

Nokia needed a way to connect its fiber insights with data from other equipment. One broader view to help operators make more transparent, cost-effective energy decisions.

Our Solution

Companion.energy connects Nokia’s fiber consumption data with the broader network energy picture.

Through integration with Nokia’s Altiplano access controller, live measurements from fiber equipment can be viewed alongside consumption data from other network elements.

This gives operators a more complete understanding of energy use, grounded in actual consumption.

The integration helps telecom operators make better-informed cost and sustainability decisions:

  • Support cost and sustainability analysis with measured data
  • Monitor live consumption from Nokia’s fiber equipment
  • Combine energy data from different network elements
  • Reduce reliance on datasheet estimates by working with real, actual, live data

Together, Nokia and Companion.energy bring equipment-level insight into a wider energy management perspective.

As a next step, operators are increasingly moving from monitoring to actively steering consumption. Companion.energy can support them in that transition.
